Wedding DJ at Square Tower Portsmouth

Square Tower is one of Portsmouth’s most distinctive wedding venues. Sitting right on the waterfront at Old Portsmouth, the historic stone building creates an atmosphere that feels both intimate and full of character once the evening reception begins.

Having DJ’d many weddings at Square Tower over the years, I know how well the venue works for a lively evening party. The long hall layout naturally draws guests towards the dance floor and it doesn’t take long for the room to fill once the music gets going.

The evening reception at Square Tower

The main hall is where the evening reception usually takes place. With its high arched ceiling and thick stone walls, the room creates a fantastic party atmosphere once the lights dim and the music starts.

Square Tower weddings tend to produce a really energetic dance floor. Guests of all ages gather on the dance floor, and the combination of sing-along favourites, classic party tracks and modern hits keeps the energy building throughout the evening.

The venue also benefits from stunning views across the harbour. Around sunset the light over the water can be incredible, although by that point I’m usually busy managing a first dance or a packed dance floor.

DJ setup at Square Tower

I normally set up at the rear of the main hall, where the top table is often positioned earlier in the day, facing down the length of the room towards the main door. This layout works well for the evening reception as it keeps the DJ connected to the dance floor while still leaving plenty of space for guests.

I have also set up on the balcony above the hall in the past, but this tends to disconnect the DJ from the dance floor and the atmosphere of the party, so the main hall setup is usually the better option.

Sound and lighting

The thick natural stone walls of Square Tower give the room very good acoustics. Because of the size of the venue you don’t need an enormous sound system to create a great atmosphere – a well balanced professional setup is more than enough to fill the room with music.

The venue also has its own disco lighting which helps create a lively party feel once the evening reception begins, so additional uplighting usually isn’t necessary.

Music at Square Tower typically finishes at 11pm, which still allows plenty of time for a packed dance floor and a memorable end to the night.
