Grittenham Barn is a beautiful countryside wedding venue near Petworth in West Sussex. The historic timber barn and surrounding South Downs landscape create a relaxed atmosphere during the day which naturally turns into a lively celebration once the evening reception begins.

Having DJ’d many weddings at Grittenham Barn over the years, I’m very familiar with how the evening reception flows within the space. Once the first dance is finished and the music starts to build, the barn quickly fills with guests ready to celebrate.

Evening receptions at Grittenham Barn have a warm, relaxed atmosphere which gradually builds into a lively party as the night goes on. With the right mix of classic party favourites, sing-along tracks and modern hits, the dance floor naturally becomes the centre of the celebration.

The character of the barn makes it a lovely place for an evening reception, and guests often move between the dance floor and the outdoor areas while the party continues inside.

Outside the barn there is a beautiful rustic courtyard space with seating and a fire pit where guests can relax and enjoy the evening air. The surrounding countryside views add to the relaxed feel of the venue — and yes, there’s even a friendly donkey nearby which always seems to amuse guests.

DJ setup at Grittenham Barn

The DJ setup position at Grittenham Barn is usually in front of the kitchen area, which is neatly hidden behind a wraparound curtain. This keeps the space looking tidy while still allowing the DJ to face out towards the dance floor and the main barn area.

The layout works well for an evening reception because the music fills the barn evenly and the dance floor naturally becomes the focal point of the room.

Sound and lighting

Grittenham Barn provides its own PA system for ceremony music and background music earlier in the day, along with a microphone for speeches.

The venue also has uplighting within the barn to help create a warm atmosphere as evening arrives. Additional lighting effects can further enhance the dance floor once the evening reception begins.

The barn acoustics work well for a wedding party and there are no restrictive sound limiters, allowing the music to reach a great party level while still keeping everything comfortable for guests.
